ZIRCONIUM COATING

WHAT IS A ZIRCONIUM TOOTH?

Zirconium tooth is a type of coating that is used to replace metal-supported porcelain coatings and contains a substrate called zirconium instead of metal. Since zirconium is white, no dark color reflection is seen as in metal supported porcelains, which in turn makes zirconium teeth more aesthetically pleasing.

THE BENEFITS OF ZIRCONIUM TEETH

  • It has no metallic reflection since the zirconium substrate is white
  • Tissue-friendly
  • Owing to its glossy surface, there is no discoloration by tea, cigarettes, etc.
  • More aesthetic due to higher light transmittance than porcelain coatings

DISADVANTAGES OF ZIRCONIUM TEETH

  • It can break in case of long bridge restorations
  • Compared to porcelain laminates, higher amount of dental tissue loss is required

PATIENTS ELIGIBLE FOR ZIRCONIUM TEETH

  • Patients with mild misalignment
  • Patients with gaps between teeth (diastema)
  • Cases where bleaching procedure yields no results
  • Patients with discoloration associated with fluorosis and use of antibiotics
  • Almost anyone with aesthetic related expectations

HOW LONG DO ZIRCONIUM TEETH LAST?

With proper oral care and regular dental office visits, a compliant zirconium coating can last many years to come.

HOW ARE ZIRCONIUM TEETH APPLIED? WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT STEPS?

  • The relevant teeth are anesthetized.
  • Teeth preparation (cuts) is completed.
  • Measurements are made with precision equipment.
  • Patient and dentist choose the restoration color and send the measurement to the technician.
  • Temporary coating is applied to prevent tooth pain
  • Zirconium substrate sent by the technician is subject to mock-up (rehearsal). If everything is fine, it is sent back to the technician for porcelain work.
  • The porcelain coated teeth received from the technician are rehearsed and sent back for polishing.
  • The final restoration received from the technician is attached on the teeth with special adherents.
